The month of September is simply buzzing with activity in the blogging world with various fall challenges (of the gothic/scary variety) and read-alongs (also of the same variety) taking place. October looks like it is going to be just as full and exciting.
And I’m envious. I really am! I haven’t committed to taking part in any of the excitement for these two months because my second baby is due in the middle of next month, and I really don’t fancy reading dark stuff in my final month. As things are I tend to get depressed quite often, driving my poor husband up the wall, and being just a wee bit too impatient with my little son who is really a gem of a little man who isn’t any real trouble at all!
I’ve been trolling the blogosphere looking for some sort of read-along or something that I could take part in that does not require me to read anything dark and that is likely to end by the first week of October. However, I haven’t been successful in the least. I did try to join a Wuthering Heights read-along that began at the beginning of this month, but a few chapters into it I realised this simply was not a book I ever wanted to read (note to self: scratch it off The Classics Club list).
So, I finally decided to host a read-along myself. Something that is light. And something that can be finished by the end of September or beginning of October.
What do you folk think of Little Women? I know there are a few from The Classics Club who have this book on their list, and I’m really eager to re-read this. It’s been a long while!
Please do vote on this mini poll so that I might know if there is anyone interested in reading this book with come September 14th.
I would definitely be interested, it’s on my classics club list and I have a lovely new edition of it
Oh, that’s great!
I’m probably going to finish my reread of it pretty soon, but I’m not going to sign up for the readalong because I’m not sure when or if. So just to say, I may be quietly reading it near you, if not actually sitting at your table.
That’s fine.:) In case you do finish it when we do or would like to contribute to any discussion that might take place, I hope you’ll join in.
Thanks for the quiet support!
I’m reading at the moment and will probably finish in the next few days. It’s not an enjoyable experience and if I didn’t have to read it for my university course I would have abandoned it long ago.
Oh! Why exactly a you finding it tedious? Would you like to join in on the discussions?
Oh no! You’ve got to give Wuthering Heights another try! (You don’t have to, but it’s one of the most beautiful love stories ever if you can get through it.
I read Little Women and all of its sequels last winter and thoroughly enjoyed them. I hope you do do the group read as there is a lot to discuss.
Well…I’ve actually given Wuthering Heights about three chances already. Somehow, I’m just not able to take to it.
I’ll be going ahead with the group read. I’d be delighted if you could join in and contribute to the discussions.
Go to the Moors, get lost on them! Then you’ll really begin to appreciate the Brontes (especially Emily).
Lol! I’m not sure when that is going to happen, IF it will ever happen. I hope to visit England some day and then maybe I’ll get to know why the Moors actually look like! And while I don’t have issues with the other Bronte sisters, I just can’t seem to take to Emily.
Only yesterday I was reading the opening lines to Charlotte’s incomplete novel and I realised another reason why I could not take to Emily. C’s writing is smoot and effortless, leading the reader from one line to the next, one thought to the next, so gradually and completely. While E’s writing (seemed to me) choppy and abrupt. Of course, this is a rather minor reason when compared to my instant dislike of the narrator himself and my absolute wariness of Heathcliff and the kind of passion he and Catherine represent. I’ve read this book before in bits and pieces because I HAD to and I just could NOT find anything in it to draw me in….
I would love to, Risa, as it’s one of my favorite books of all time, but I’m completely snowed under in September and October. I hope you get some people to join you!
By the way, I don’t know how I missed that you were expecting next month. I saw it over at the Wuthering Heights sign up post at Unputdownables. Just wanted to congratulate you.
Yeah! I’ve noticed you’re keeping very busy these next couple of months in the blogging world. All the best with your fall read a thon and the October challenge!
And thank you so much!
